In a action packed day at Cheltenham, Sam Red gave us and probably Dan Skelton our best day as he won the Ryman Stationery Cheltenham Business Club Amateur Rider Race under a terrific ride by William Marshall. It was Will’s 2nd ever winner over rules, both coming on our horses.
The day had started with 2 runners at Doncaster, Documenting up first in the 6f C2 handicap. John Egan rode and we wanted a bit of cover as the horse can be quite keen through the early part of his race. The gates opened and Documenting shot out, opening up a length lead but throwing his head around and pulling Johns arms off. He lost any chance of winning the race with his antics in the first couple of furlongs and trailed in well beaten.
At 4.45, The Throstles took his place in a warm looking lineup over 1m2f. He was travelling like the winner up to 2 out, where John asked him for an effort and we got nothing. It’ll be back to the AW for him.
Feeling a little dejected, there was hope Sam may sneak a place and that looked what we were set for 2 fences out. He had put in a brilliant round of jumping and looked back to his old self, staying on in to 3rd over the last before the leader Oighear Dubh ran out! Will picked up his whip and give Sam a tap behind the saddle with which he flew. He caught Presenting Julio and battled on gamely to beat Fifty Shades by 3/4 of a length.
A day none of us will ever forget, Our first ever winner at Cheltenham. Dan’s 100th winner beating Martin Pipes long standing record of the fastest 100 winners and Will’s first Cheltenham winner. If he carries on riding like that it won’t be too long before he has another.
